So you know you here all about Spring Cleaning come Spring but what about Spring Decluttering? Is that a thing? It should be! I think cleaning and decluttering go hand and hand! Having a clean home is wonderful but having a clean and cutter free home is even better. So I wanted to put together a thorough guide of how to declutter your home, room by room to slash the overwhelm.

I am going to be honest and just let you in on a little secret…I am a low key hoarder. I am absolutely terrible at getting rid of stuff. Because ya know, I might need to use it eventually. Not to mention, decluttering overwhelms me. That is why I decided to just make a list of all the things in my house that need to leave. So I thought I’d share it with you guys and even make a PDF spring decluttering checklist to make it even easier to declutter your home.

Not only will your house have more space but so will your mind. They say that clutter in your external world can add to stress and anxiety. And I believe it. There are some days where I am already stressed out and I look around the house only to get even more stressed out.

So if that is you, then you are in the right place. Below is a list of how to declutter your home…room by room! If you are short on time (I get it, no hard feelings) then go ahead and enter your email below to get your Spring Declutter Checklist. Otherwise, stay put and keep reading on.

Before we get to the goods, let’s address some decluttering tips to make things a little easier and a lot less overwhelming!

Spring Decluttering Tips

If you don’t have the time to put on a garage sale, put your stuff up on offer up, or going through the hassle to try and sell your stuff you no longer want…then just donate it!

I am really speaking to myself here because I always feel the need to sell my stuff. I don’t know why but it leads to stuff just taking up space because I never get around to selling it. So if you truly want to declutter your house right now, then put in a box or bag and take it to Goodwill on a weekend. That way it is gone with no extra stress!

Make A Decluttering Schedule

We are all busy. Some of us have kids, jobs, lives…so you don’t have to devote a whole day to decluttering your whole house. Make a schedule and space it out. You can do one room every day, every weekend, or every couple of weeks—whatever works for you and your life. But if you make a plan and a schedule with what rooms to declutter on specific days, then it will more than likely get done. It’s less overwhelming when you space it out and take your time.

For me, decluttering and organizing takes time and usually makes a mess so then you are having to clean also. So that is why I like to stick to one room at a time. I have toddlers so decluttering my home looks like a month long project but that is okay because it is worth it!

When deciding to get rid of an item (especially if you are a hoarder like me) ask yourself these questions:

Do I use this frequently?

Do I need this?

Does this item make my life easier in some way?

Does this item bring me joy? Is it sentimental?

Would I buy this again if I saw it in a store?

Do I have another item like this?

So now that went over my three main tips for decluttering, let’s get to how to declutter your home, room by room.

Kitchen

Go through your Tupperware and match all the lids to the containers. Any that don’t have matches, throw out!

Go through all your dishes, and throw out dishes that are chipped or worn out.

Throw out old water bottles you don’t use anymore (I have a million water bottles and only use like maybe one).

Throw out you children’s dishes, cups, or utensils that they have outgrown.

Throw out or donate unused kitchen appliances.

Throw out old pots and pans, cutting boards, or cookie sheets.

Get rid of any cook books that you don’t use or haven’t looked at in years (ahem, me)

Go through your cleaning supplies under your sink and toss out supplies that are old and expired.

Go through your pantry food and spices. Throw out expired food and spices. Donate food you don’t want or need (if not expired).

Do the same for your fridge and freezer. Throw out any expired foods, condiments, etc. You may be surprise of how much freezer stuff has gone bad (at least this is true for us).

Do you have extra jars, wine glasses, coffee cups that you don’t need or is taking up too much space? Or is that just me? If so, then only keep the ones you truly want and donate the rest!

Living Room

Go Through you home decor and toss what no longer brings you joy or you are bored with.

Do you ever look at your home decor and think I need a change? Or is that just me? I take this time to look around and any home decor that I am bored with or no longer brings me joy…I put in the Goodwill box! Then I can slowly buy new pieces to transition to a new look.

If you don’t want to buy new home decor or not ready to part with your pieces (I’ve been there), here is a hack! Move your pieces around…put them in different spots of the house or different areas of the room to give it a new look just like you would with moving furniture around to change up the space!

Go Through any and all drawers/shelves in your living space and go through the questions above to decide what to keep and what goes. Put things back in an organized manner.

Change out and update picture frames. Put old pictures in a photobook.

Go Through the closet if you have one in your living room and toss jackets that no longer fit, or in bad shape, or no longer want. Donate the ones in good condition.

Do you still have DVDs? We do, a ton! Go through all your DVDs, CDs, etc. and get rid of ones you know longer need or want.

Master Bedroom

Go through all your clothes and shoes in your closet. Get rid of anything too small, old and worn out, or no longer want. Feel free to run through the questions above if you are having a tough time getting rid of a piece of clothing or pair of shoes.

I also take this time to organize my closet with all the things I want to keep. I am OCD and put all the pieces of clothing together like tank tops all in a row, sweaters, dresses, etc. I do the same with shoes. With declutter comes organizing and it makes me so happy.

Go through all dressers and do the same as above with your clothes.

Take a look at all your decor and pictures on the walls. If you want to get rid of anything, now is the time to do it!

Do the same for stuff on top of dressers or desks.

If you have bedside tables, go through those and throw out any garbage. Go through all the stuff that accumulates and get rid of all those things that don’t serve you any longer!

Go through make up and toss out all the old make up you have! Clean your brushes too and organize all our make up.

Go through jewelry and toss out earrings that don’t have matches or any rusted or worn out jewelry. Get rid of pieces you never wear, no longer want or need.

Go through socks and throw away socks that don’t have matches. Throw out your old undies and bras.

Kids Bedrooms

Go through all the clothes in drawers, closets, baskets and get rid/donate all clothes that are too small! We leave all the too small clothes in bags to go through at a later time! They remain in our attic. We have little kids and want to keep some clothes that we have a sentimental attachment to and then donate the clothing that we don’t want to keep.

Go through shoes and do the same as above.

Go though socks and toss out socks that are too small or don’t have pairs.

Go through all toys and get rid of toys that are broken or damaged. Then donate toys that your kids have outgrown or no longer play with. Then go through and organize toys.

Go through books and toss out damaged books. And donate books that your kids have outgrown.

Bathrooms

Toss old or frayed tooth brushes

Go through lotions, perfumes, soaps, etc. and toss out ones that are expired or you have had for a long time. Then organize the ones you keep.

Go through bath towels and get rid of any that are frayed or worn out.

Go through kids bath toys if you have kids and get rid of old or worn out toys.

Misc

Go through your file cabinet and toss files you no longer need and organize.

Go through any junk drawers and toss things out. And reorganize it.

Go through your medicine cabinet and toss out expired medicines.

Go through magazines and toss out ones you have already read. Go through books if you have any and donate ones you no longer need.

Go through blankets and pillows and toss out any you don’t need. I am a blanket hoarder so this one is hard for me!

Garage

Go through holiday boxes and get rid of damaged or broken decor, lights, etc.

Go through tools and get rid of duplicates.

Go through attic and use questions to decide what to keep and what to toss.

Get rid of any outdoor toys that kids have outgrown.

Take your pile of stuff to Goodwill or do that garage sale you’ve been talking about
